The evening of May 13 was a perfect night for serving others. The First Christian Church Of Mableton hosted Meals On A Mission whereby volunteers from the church and the South Cobb Lions Club distributed USDA Food Boxes to 130 families. The USDA Food Boxes supplied by Sweetwater Mission contained meat, fruit, milk, yogurt, vegetables, cheese, cereal and Kenny's Key Lime Pies. We also provided over 200 kids meals and kids drinks to families with children. As a special bonus, the Cobb County Public Library System brought educational arts and crafts for the children. Over 200 hot meals were given out to hungry people. We kept Executive Minister Barry Smith's words of encouragement in mind that “serving others together is beneficial for everyone involved". Volunteering brings out our special talents.
Many thanks to the Legacy At The River Line HOA for removing 25 bags of litter from their adopted two mile stretch of Discovery Boulevard. The South Cobb Lions and Mableton Improvement Coalition pitched in to lend a hand. Patty Auch and Patty Rech "kicked it up a notch" too.
If you or your home owners association is interested in the Adopt-A-Mile program, please contact Dawn at keepcobbbeautiful@cobbcounty.org.
Volunteer Ridge good citizens were discovered cleaning up Veterans Memorial Highway from Buckner Road to Pebblebrook Road on May 15. Mentored and supplied by Keep Cobb Beautiful board member Jeff Padgett, they felt motivated to clean up their subdivision and high visibility areas such as Veterans Memorial Highway. It is additionally inspiring that they are interested in the Adopt-A-Mile program. Thank you very much Volunteer Ridge citizens for being such great neighbors.

The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team of Keller Williams participated in Keller Williams Red Day, which is practiced annually on May 13 by Keller Williams real estate agents and teams. KW Red Day is Keller Williams’ annual day of service. The heart of Keller Williams’ and The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team’s culture is a shared commitment to community service.
This year, the team participated in KW Red Day by donating food items to Marietta-based MUST Ministries, a local organization that addresses the basic needs of individuals, families and children in Cobb and Cherokee counties. They help people of the community with food, housing, clothing and workforce development.
Over the course of two weeks, the team collected over 590 food items to donate to the MUST Ministries Food Rapid Response program. The Food Rapid Response program helps at-risk students and their families who do not have enough food during the COVID-19 pandemic. MUST is distributing Family Food Boxes at several distribution sites during the summer to help families that need assistance. They will also be starting up their Summer Lunch program for children in need soon. The program will run from June 1-July 30 and will provide breakfast and lunch to over 6,000 children for nine weeks. MUST Ministries will also have a “weekly wellness focus” such as dental health, hygiene, physical education and books that will be provided to children in need.
For more information, visit: https://www.mustministries.org/give-help.
On May 11, Sweetwater Mission, the South Cobb Rotary Club and the Cobb County Precinct 2 Police Department teamed up to celebrate Nurse Week by hosting a parade, providing delicious meals supplied by Pasta Bella and Kenny's Pies for over 1,500 nurses and medical personnel working two different shifts at Wellstar Cobb Hospital on Austell Road.
"This is the least that we could do to let our heroes on the COVID front lines know how much we love and value them," said Debbie Ginocchio with Sweetwater Mission.
It was a great experience for everybody involved. Sweetwater Mission has been instrumental in providing nourishment to families in Cobb, Fulton and Douglas counties that have faced hardships over the past year due to the pandemic. The work is not over yet and Sweetwater Mission is in need of volunteers.

One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase access to books, especially at home and in their native language. Cobb Collaborative in partnership with Cobb County Schools is leading an initiative to increase access to books in Cobb through Little Free Lending Libraries.
The Little Free Library is a nonprofit dedicated to putting books in the hands of children and adults in communities around the world. The book-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing access and encouraging a love of reading. They operate under the “Take One, Leave One” theory.
Dr. Alvin Thomas, principal of Tapp Middle School, officially cut the ribbon to open the LFL and commented how much he was looking forward to seeing students, families and community members using the library.
“We’re part of the community, so we hope people will use this great resource, particularly this summer when the school doors will be closed, but our campus will still be accessible to all.”

With a goal of bringing comfort and hope through art to healthcare workers and those on the frontlines, students at North Cobb Christian School created canvases with messages of encouragement that were donated to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
NCCS students partnered with The Foundation for Hospital Art to create a unique collage of artwork, which will be installed on the walls of the hospital.
“This year has been challenging for all healthcare workers, and it is gestures such as these that make a difference in our overall morale – not only for physicians and nurses but for the entire care team that is required to work in synchrony to care for people,” said Zenobia JonesFoster, MD, MPH, director of Hospital Medicine for WellStar Kennestone. “This gesture will bring a smile to many of our faces and motivate our team. Thank you for supporting us in this endeavor to fight this pandemic.”
The canvases, which will be displayed in the staff workroom, feature messages like, “You are brave,” “You are a hero,” and “Thank you for saving others.”
“This past year presented challenges our community could have never anticipated and altered life in just about every way imaginable,” said Dana Caviness, director of Service Excellence for WellStar. “But amid all the difficulties COVID imposed, there is a realization that human kindness is far more powerful than an illness. The generosity from students and schools like North Cobb Christian reflect the resiliency and compassion of our community. The inspiring artwork will be shared with our teams and undoubtedly serve as a reminder that our community stands with us, supporting and cheering us on! It means more than I could ever put into words.”
North Cobb Christian School students completed this service project through their participation in Spring Term, an annual tradition during which students in 9th-12th grades spend a week participating in mission work and cultural immersions locally and globally. WellStar Kennestone Hospital was selected as the beneficiary of one of the Spring Term projects this year to give back to the frontline healthcare workers in the community.

On April 17, approximately 25 students from the Mount Paran Christian School Beta Club joined other local volunteers in a community service project benefitting Allatoona Creek Park.
For four hours, those present worked together, not as individual members of Beta Club but as contributing members of the community, to create and renovate mountain bike trails for community use.
At the project's conclusion, all volunteers gathered for lunch, and the lead park volunteer highlighted exceptional students for the hard work he saw them doing. For MPCS student and Beta Club president Zachary Fors, this was more than just an MPCS service event, it was a community event in every sense.
"It was a glimmer of everything I wanted to do as President of Beta," Fors said. "[We were] truly creating a community-driven organization. This was one of the most successful events I have ever been a part of, and it was just a powerful thing to see."
Witnessing MPCS students working alongside members of the community-at-large to accomplish a task for the greater good inspired those present at the service event.
"It is hard to explain, but it was a powerful effort," said Fors. "The school really stepped up, and people saw what it means to be servant-leaders at MPCS."
Head of High School and Assistant Head of School Tawanna Rusk says Fors is "a rare and special gift to the world" and that he is "a light [who finds] every possible way to serve others!"

[On April 20], I had appointment at my podiatrist office. As I walked in I realized I forgot my “mask.” I went to the receptionist desk to ask if they had one, but she was busy. I thanked her and we both agreed that we can’t wait until wearing these face coverings is over.

Kennesaw-based The Dave Krache Foundation has donated new softball equipment to the Mountain Top Boys Home, a non-profit residential home for boys in Sugar Valley. The home has been in operation since the 1970s, when it was launched as one of the early community outreach projects of MUST Ministries.
“Our boys were saying they want to play ball, but we didn’t have bats, gloves and balls for them to do that,” said Donnis Steele, executive director of the Mountain Top Boys Home. “We can’t wait to surprise them with this wonderful donation.”
“This is what the Dave Krache Foundation is all about,” said organization president Donna Krache. “We’re happy to facilitate a way for these kids to play sports. That’s our mission.”
When they heard about the need, the Foundation board members voted unanimously to dedicate the funds to softball equipment for the boys home. A few members went shopping to use the funds to purchase gloves, bats, balls, bases and scorekeeping clipboards, to give the boys everything they need to enjoy playing.
The Dave Krache Foundation is a 501(c)3. Started in 2012, the Dave Krache Foundation pays fees for children to play sports when their parents cannot afford it. To date, the foundation has helped more than 900 kids throughout metro Atlanta play almost every sport, from football to baseball, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, martial arts and many others. The organization honors the memory of the late Dave Krache, an avid sports fan, community leader, volunteer and businessman.

In the United States, approximately 48 million Americans live with hearing loss, and it is important to diagnose this early on to avoid additional health complications.
The Marietta Hearing Center, 707 Whitlock Avenue, Suite A36 in Marietta, was honored to be one of 300-plus hearing care practices participating in the ReSound Gives Sound campaign in January and awarding hearing aids to individuals who were impacted by the pandemic.
Marietta Hearing Center gave away two sets of hearing aids to people in need.
Sean's hearing had worsened as an adult. For years, Sean delivered and installed medical equipment for families in need until losing his job due to COVID-19.
Scott is a recently retired and spends time teaching and volunteering within his community. His hearing aids were at the end of his life cycle. Thanks to a friend's nomination, Scott won ReSound's Gift of Hearing and met with Dr. Brittany Tardy at Marietta Hearing Center to discuss his hearing aid options.

Our neighborhood is just the best. In order to include everyone in our annual Hardage Farm Easter egg hunt this year, MHS freshman Nora Hart has created a socially distanced event. She made close to 20 Easter egg yard signs and "hid" them throughout the neighborhood in front yards. Now, neighbors can walk, bike or drive around the neighborhood "hunting" for eggs while maintaining a safe distance. This little act of kindness has spread so much cheer.

Earlier this month MDJ reporter Shannon Ballew wrote a story about Tara Midha, a junior at Campbell High School, and her five-year-old golden retriever, Adi, a licensed therapy dog, bringing some cheer to children and seniors in medical care. Midha set up a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $3,000 to print 200 "The Story of Adi" books. To read the original story, visit https://bit.ly/3d7A80R.
Since publication, Midha contacted Ballew and reported that she has passed her goal and was overwhelmed by the support of everyone.
Over the past few weeks, Midha has received 100 books and will be distributing them to Atria and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. She has also wrapped some of the books so that it would be more fun for the children and residents to open.
Midha will be keeping the fundraiser open to make more copies of Adi's book. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/f/the-story-of-adi.

Piedmont Church recently delivered 184 gift cards, worth $25 each, to Metro Ambulance employees as part of our March Love Does to thank our local heroes.
This was also a way we could bless our local restaurants. We purchased at least $500 from each of the following restaurants - Copeland's, Rafferty's Carrabas, CFA, Firehouse Subs, 1885 Grill, Otter's and Paradise Grill.

Frannie Hitchens is 10 years old and in 5th grade at West Side Elementary School.
Frannie started the year with a resolution to give back to the community. We reached out to the Outreach Ministry team at our church, St. Catherine’s Episcopal in East Cobb, to see if there were any upcoming service projects she could be a part of. While not officially sponsored by the church due to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions, several families had been doing a monthly collection since December to support the ER staff at Kennestone Hospital.
Each month, the collection gives one shift, 60 people, a snack, drink and a special gift as a small thank you.
Frannie was able to coordinate the March collection which involved picking a theme, asking for donations and coordinating delivery. After deciding on a St. Patrick’s Day theme for March, she made a flyer asking for specific items to be dropped at her porch and/or monetary donations sent to her mother's Venmo.
The flyer was sent to her Hardage Farm neighbors and several families from her church. In just two weeks, Frannie raised over $200 in addition to donated snacks and chapsticks. She used the money to make a budget and shop for the Healthcare Heroes to fill two huge boxes giving each of the 60 staff a Gatorade drink, 2 snacks, a chapstick and a package of facial wipes to keep their skin clean under the mask.
She also made 60 pins with a message that said, “We’re so LUCKY to have a Healthcare Hero like you!”

Every Monday, the First Presbyterian Church parking lot is full of volunteers loading 30 pound food boxes off of the truck into people's cars. On March 8, teachers who are members of Alpha Delta Kappa and the Marietta chapter of Alpha Pi joined forces with FPC and presented them with 30 new reading books to be passed out to families receiving food boxes. This was all part of the Read Across Georgia effort to put books into the hands of children.

KIDS Care would like to say thank you to everyone who donated and collected food for our nonprofits Food Drive on Feb. 13. Look what we have all done for our community! We collected and delivered 3,111 donations that were given to local nonprofits feeding the homeless and food insecure in Cobb County. What an amazing showing of generosity, kindness and compassion by our local community.
All donations were divided up and given to Cobb Senior Services, The Center for Family Resources, The Salvation Army and MUST Ministries.
Thank you to all who donated food! Our community came together and gave from their hearts, this all added up to significant donations to help feed those who are food insecure in Cobb County. Thank you to the Kindsters who volunteered to give food, help collect food, work our Drive by Drop off Day in the rain, unload the food, and sort/count the food donations. Together, we all made a difference, we all shined a little light for our neighbors who are hungry.
The community can also view a video about the food drive at https://youtu.be/pT6Lovq4K2k.

Bob Geoff wrote a book called, "Love Does," which states that love is a verb, an action, rather than a noun.
Piedmont Church embraced this thought with a special above and beyond offering each month that goes toward showing love to our community. March focuses on front line workers. We like to call them the “365ers.” The people who are on the front lines 24x7, 365 days a year. It was an honor to host a cook out for the officers of Cobb County’s Precinct One at Piedmont Church on March 12.

Sweetwater Mission hosted the March 19 morning food drive assisted by the Elite Athletes, First Christian Church Of Mableton and South Cobb Lions Club volunteers at The Waverly Trailer Home Park. Together, we provided 182 families with USDA Food Boxes containing fruit, milk, meat, cheese, vegetables, yogurt, bread and Kenny's Pies. In addition, we supplied over 470 kids meals and kids drinks to school age children. As a special treat, Amerigroup RealSolutions joined us to coach people on navigating complex healthcare situations. We worked seamlessly as a team to serve our neighbors.
We really appreciate the volunteers from the South Cobb Rotary Club, Mableton Improvement Coalition and South Cobb Lions Club who worked really hard to remove 37 bags of litter along with a bunch of dumped items on March 20 from the adopted section of the East West Connector and surrounding streets. The area looks much better now and we had fun working together in the beautiful weather.
There are a couple of available adopt-a-mile opportunities of the highly traveled East West Connector. If you are interested in learning more about the Adopt-A-Mile program, please contact Dawn at keepcobbbeautiful@cobbcounty.org.
