Scott Ratliff’s three-point burst in the first quarter put the Atlanta Blaze ahead, and they never again trailed in a 19-12 win Saturday over the Boston Cannons at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
The Blaze (1-1) trailed 3-2 after Boston’s Ryan Walsh scored with 9:42 left in the period, but Ratliff tied at 3-all 13 seconds later. The former Walton High School standout then gave Atlanta a 5-3 lead on a 2-point goal with 8:09 left.
Boston (0-2) could never bring the game any closer than two points the rest of the way.
Matt Gibson led Atlanta with four goals, while Tommy Palasek had three. Dylan Donahue and Kevin Rice joined Ratliff with two apiece, with Rice also adding a game-high five assists.
Chris Madalon saved 17 of the 28 shots he faced in the Atlanta net.
Sergio Perkovic scored four goals for Boston, with James Pannell — the Blaze’s second-leading scorer last season — adding three
