After ranking second following Friday’s preliminaries, Marietta native Daniel Haugh was unable to keep up in the finals of the hammer throw Saturday at the world championships.
Haugh threw 256 feet, 3 inches at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. His preliminary mark was 260-3.
The 27-year-old Haugh was one year removed from finishing 11th at the Tokyo Olympics. He was the 2019 NCAA champion in the hammer throw while competing for Kennesaw State.
Poland’s Pawel Fajdek, the bronze medalist in Tokyo, won his fifth straight world championship with a throw of 268-11, edging countryman and Olympic gold medalist Wojciech Nowicki (265-10). Norway’s Elvind Henriksen (265-4) was third.
The U.S. team’s Rudy Winkler (259-2) was sixth, with Alex Young (241-6) 11th.
Former Kell High School star Kendell Williams will compete in the seven legs of the heptathlon Sunday and Monday. A two-time Olympian, the 27-year-old Williams finished fifth in the heptathlon at the Tokyo Games last summer.
Williams is coming off a third-place finish in the pentathlon during March’s indoor world championships in Serbia.
