American Daniel Haugh set the pace in the early qualifying round of the men’s hammer throw Friday morning at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field.
Haugh finished first in his qualifying group with a throw of 260 feet, 3 inches on his final throw. After the second qualifying group took its turn, Haugh dropped to second overall, with Poland’s Pawel Fajdek coming away with the best throw of the day at 262-9.
Haugh finished ahead of Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki, who finished third at 259-3.
Haugh posted a personal-best throw of 263-0 1/2 to win the event at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in June. Nowicki took home the gold medal in the event last year at the Tokyo Olympics.
The top 12 throwers qualified for the final round, which is scheduled for Saturday. U.S. throwers Rudy Winkler, fifth at 257-11, and Alex Young, 12th at 244-11, also advanced to the final.
